Maintaining Streaks

Do this thing every day and you’ll be on your way to success.

We used to laugh at kids on Snapchat who “had” to keep their streaks going as they wanted to get them higher and higher. Fights and disagreements would break out if a streak was lost.

The pressure of having to do something each and every day just to maintain a counter as it goes up and up. Maybe it gives you some prizes, maybe it doesn’t, but the goal is to keep the streak going for as long as you can.

And yet, here I am, running streaks on writing, drawing, working, day after day that there are moments when I think — “Is this still about the work or about the streak?” — and the follow up always is “How much longer can I keep this going?”

Streaks are based on the creation of habits, do X and continue doing X and you will develop the normalcy that it’s part of your daily routine. But, how long that normalcy takes is different for everyone so there is no exact number here on what it should be.

There are a number of streaks/habits that I’m currently working towards;

  • Writing — Every day, 750 words, this keeps me honest, because yes it has a little ticker that goes up each day and I get badges as I get higher — although now I’ve reached a level where the badges are massively spread apart so now it’s game to see if I can keep…
