Status- Leadership SHIFT Tip

This Friday we celebrate the birthday of one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss. One my faves from his whimsical, rhythmic collection is The Star-Belly Sneetches, where he writes about challenging topics like ethnicity, diversity, and status.

And speaking of status, this weekend I’m in Vail for a client event. Yet, my body thinks it’s in New Jersey. So my early rise and shine gave me a chance to hear Seth Godin riff about the role of status on this new podcast, Akimbo. And with a Seuss shout-out, he even linked status and Yertle the Turtle — very cool Seth.

The pursuit of status is the secret sauce in the movies we love, like The Shawshank Redemption, The Princess Bride, and Breaking Away. Ok, those are movies I love, but it’s also in the films you love.

Status is why we donate to charities and is woven into brands like Patagonia, Oakley, and Burton that line the quaint streets of Vail village. You can even feel it when you split the check with another and wait for the inevitable question, “What did you put down for a tip?”

It will make things happen when you know how your idea, product, or service will improve the status of those you are looking to change. But, as I shared during last week’s webinar, the unconscious pursuit of status can lead to worry, doubt, and even shame if we lose it, as Seth shared.

So pursue away; today is your day. You’re off to great places. You’re off and away. Your castle is waiting. So… get on your way! But be mindful of why you are storming it. It’s more fun that way.

Finally, last week I announced a new coaching membership program called The Pace Line for sales and marketing professionals who are eager to develop but don’t have access to corporate sponsored executive coaching.

Inspired by Seth’s first Akimbo podcast, I’m offering ten members of our peloton a free membership. If interested, click PACE LINE to learn more.
