How I Survived Grocery Shopping Frustration with my Husband

Usually it’s an exasperating workout— this time he taught me something.

Fred and I grocery shop in totally different ways and I was dreading the trip. I, of course, shop in the right way — the way everyone should.

For me and many women who have juggled jobs, kids, etc, we shop for groceries in a precise, task-oriented manner. We are on a mission. We know how to do this efficiently, cost-effectively and quickly. Especially in the years when we’re feeding teenagers. We are grocery ninja shoppers; true leaders in process and nutrition.

My husband’s long trips to the grocery store have been a mystery to our family for years. He only went for a couple of things- how, HOW could it possibly take so long?

I’ve gone with him several times and left in utter frustration at his seemingly haphazard approach.

We stopped yesterday to pick some things up from the store, and I was anticipating an exercise in frustration. But as I waited in my usual impatient state, watching him pick out just the right pears to make a pie (yes he makes pear pie– and it’s actually really good), I realized something.

He is deliberate while shopping. Rather than an exercise in impatience or speed, it’s more of a mindfulness experience. He truly is one with the quart of milk he selects, and I believe he is picturing it on the shelf in our fridge as he places it in the cart.

So while I am poking fun at him, it did make me think, as I was watching him, that maybe adopting a little more of his style would be beneficial. A more deliberate approach, taking the time to be thoughtful, is nicer. Why not experience things a bit more, instead of embracing the constant race to get on to the next aisle? Or be more deliberate in that next task that’s on the list too?
